The forestry department has issued a warning to the public as Cyprus enters its peak fire season, urging residents and visitors alike to avoid any activity that could spark a blaze.
In a public appeal released today to mark European Natura 2000 Day, officials stressed that the risk of wildfires is high and rising. Fire crews across the island are already fully deployed and on high alert, with operational teams standing by to respond to any outbreak, the department said.
This year’s message is “The Forest Needs You.” It’s a call to action for everyone to protect Cyprus’ woodlands, particularly those areas within the Natura 2000 network, a system of protected sites across Europe aimed at preserving vital habitats and threatened species.
Cyprus ranks among the top EU countries in terms of Natura 2000 coverage, with a large share of the island’s land falling under this environmental safety net. Forests make up more than 70 per cent of these areas, forming the backbone of the country’s ecological heritage.
Speaking on the significance of May 21, recognised as European Natura 2000 Day, the department said the date presents a chance to highlight the island’s natural riches and renew a collective pledge to safeguard them.
“Protecting the forests is everyone’s responsibility,” the department said.
“Each careless act, a discarded cigarette, an open flame, could destroy habitats that took centuries to form.”
The forestry department manages state woodlands with a strong focus on sustainability, biodiversity and long-term environmental health. Wildfire prevention remains a top priority, with resources directed towards early detection, preparedness and rapid response.
Cyprus’ forests are under constant threat from fires, often fuelled by human negligence and prolonged dry conditions. Authorities have warned that even small incidents can escalate rapidly, causing devastating losses to wildlife and landscapes.
Efforts to protect Natura 2000 sites are ongoing, with new investments in fire-fighting equipment, training and public awareness campaigns the department said. The aim is to reduce risk and shield the country’s most valuable green spaces from irreversible harm.
The department’s message concluded with a reminder of its mission:
“We remain committed to the preservation, enhancement and continued protection of Cyprus’ forests, for current and future generations.”
