Hello June, hello festival season! Summer is officially here which can only mean one thing; it is time to welcome established and beloved and new festivals. You will not have to look far this June for a dose of culture as nearly every city or village organises a pop-up bazaar, traditional fair or big music happenings. Read on to discover when and where some of this month’s biggest festivals are happening.
Currently in its final stretch at Pera Oreinis is the 7th Cyprus Accordion Festival. Though this Sunday is the last day of the festival, there is still plenty on from children’s art workshops and village cycling rides to five concerts starting at 6.30pm.
Next week, the 26th Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival will kick off in Limassol and between June 4 and 22, it will present 10 productions from seven countries. The performances will take place at Rialto Theatre in Limassol except for the Full Moon production which will travel to the Nicosia Municipal Theatre on June 8 before its Rialto Theatre showcase on June 11.
The first week of June will also feature traditional festivals and Deryneia is getting ready for its annual Strawberry Festival on June 6. The village’s Anagennisi stadium will fill with the region’s strawberry farmers showcasing the summer fruit, chefs presenting recipes and singers from Cyprus and Greece. The evening’s musical highlight will be Peggy Zena who will perform live and, for fans of baking, a competition will take place with TV chef Chryso Lefou as the host.
Another festival will honour another popular summer fruit. The Kambos Cherry Festival will be on from June 7 to 8 transforming the village square into an open-air market. Stalls with fresh cherries, traditional sweets, jams, handicrafts and street food will fill the square while a live music and dance programme is planned. Experiential workshops and activities for all ages, excursions and exhibitions will take place throughout the two days to bring more life to the village.

Avgorou village will welcome the 13th Annual Lavender Festival, organised by CyHerbia Botanical Park & Labyrinth on June 14 and 15. In one of the most colourful and fragrant times of the year, the park will welcome visitors to show them how lavender essential oil is distilled, take them on guided tours of the lavender garden, participate in hands-on lavender workshops and even take professional photos in the purple fields.
One of the biggest happenings in June is the re-birth of AfroBanana Festival which has transitioned to a new name, location and vibe. This year, the team brings the first edition of the Alternative Brains Rule Festival which will activate central Nicosia. From June 19 to 22, the Nicosia Municipal Gardens and Theatre will host live music artists, DJs, imaginative art installations, workshops, art corners and community gatherings in a similar think-outside-the-box concept as previous festivals.
Downtown Nicosia will fill with even more music on June 21 as Make Music Cyprus celebrates World Music Day. The event will host a variety of musicians performing live and for free across different outdoor stages in the old city, from squares to cafés. The programme will be announced soon.
Towards the end of the month, the 10th Paphos International Film Festival will feature a carefully curated selection of captivating short films from all corners of the world, from comedies to documentaries and everything in between. From June 27 to 29, at Technopolis20 cultural centre, open-air screenings will take place for free and with subtitles in English.
And that is not all that is happening in June. The Images & Views of Alternative Cinema Film Festival returns to the Hambis Municipal Printmaking Museum on June 16 till 22, World Refugee Day is on June 13 and the 4th Cyprus Bloomsday Festival is coming up on June 16!
