Citizen groups and affected will protest on Thursday against the decision by Nicosia Municipality to reopen the northern section of Makarios Avenue to private vehicles.
Under the slogan A Lively Makarios Ave for People, Not for Cars, a series of actions and measures aimed at reversing this decision will be held, starting with a protest on Thursday at 6.30pm on Spyridaki Square (360 building) on Makarios Avenue.
“The redevelopment of this part of Makarios Avenue in recent years, with restrictions on private vehicles, has been a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility and the urban regeneration of the capital’s city centre,” organisers said.
“Reversing this policy would be a step backward. Not only does it go against EU policies that Cyprus has adopted, but it may also block future initiatives and jeopardide EU funding opportunities for the further revitalidation of the area – causing irreversible damage for us all.”
The protest organisers are calling for the preservation of Makarios Avenue as a public space as it currently stands, with restrictions on private vehicles and the adoption of meaningful incentives and disincentives to boost visitation, residency and business activity – without reverting to car traffic.
They also support the creation and urgent implementation of a state-led strategy focusing on accessibility, aesthetic improvement and the social life of the area that will enhance the cultural and social activities in the district.
The organisers believe that the decision-making process should involve all stakeholders (residents, business owners, users) and civil society through broader and more meaningful consultation.
In addition to a peaceful gathering, the protest will include statements from organisations and citizens, as well as various creative activities, music and performances that highlight the joy of life in the area.
“Makariou is not just a street,” they conclude. “It is the future of the city. It belongs to us. And we will claim it!”
