Official efforts towards nursery school teachers to cancel strike measures were unsuccessful, the education ministry said on Tuesday, hours after the teachers went on strike.
The ministry said a dialogue had begun in January and a call was made to the trade unions to continue those discussions, however “it was not possible to obtain a positive response”.
In a press release, the ministry said dialogue was the only way to resolve disputes and promote solutions.
The ministry said it “fully understood” the inconvenience caused to families across Cyprus by the strike in community nursery schools.
Sek and Peo trade unions said on Tuesday morning that they had sent various proposals to improve the working conditions to the education ministry since 2023, but that the education ministry “offered no response or indication of progress”.
In addition, they pointed out that an agreement signed in 2018 which foresaw the transfer of control of nursery schools to school boards was not implemented, despite the fact that this “would have solved many of the current problems”.
