Two industrial dustbins were torched behind the Elias Neocleous & Co law offices in central Limassol over the weekend, fuelling growing concern over a string of unexplained bin fires in the city.
The blaze took place on Demetriou Glinou Street sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. According to the law firm’s corporate quality assurance manager, Tasoulla Theodorou, two of the four green bins located behind the building were found completely burnt out.
“The incident happened during the weekend May 31 – June 1,” she told Cyprus Mail.
“Unfortunately, the camera did not catch any suspicious activity. Two out of the four big green dustbins we have behind our building were burnt out by unknown people.”
Theodorou said she contacted the Limassol police following the fire. Officers informed her that similar incidents have been reported in the city in recent weeks. Despite regular night patrols, police have not yet identified any suspects.
“They have patrols during the night-time but with no luck,” she said.
“Our main concern is that things may get worse and harm our property and the neighbourhood. Something has to be done by the authorities.”
Photos seen by Cyprus Mail show the area scorched, with the bins reduced to charred remains. No injuries were reported, and the flames did not spread to surrounding buildings. However, the incident has left nearby residents and employees on edge.
“We are worried for our buildings and the neighbourhood,” Theodorou added.
While police have confirmed they are looking into the matter, no arrests have been made and the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Authorities are urging members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour.
The incident is the latest in a growing number of bin fires across Limassol, raising questions over public safety and the effectiveness of existing patrol measures. Local voices are calling for greater surveillance and stronger preventative action.
