A surge of hot air sweeping across Cyprus is sending temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages, triggering concerns for public health and safety.
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a bulletin warning of a thermal air mass affecting the region. By midday on Monday, inland temperatures are expected to reach a sweltering 38 degrees Celsius, while coastal areas and higher mountains will see highs of around 29C.
Monday began with dense low cloud and morning fog, especially along the coast. However, conditions are set to improve, with mainly clear skies forecast for the afternoon.
Winds are expected to shift during the day, starting off light and sea-based at around 3 Beaufort, then gradually becoming south-westerly to north-westerly, ranging from light to moderate (3 to 4 Beaufort). The sea will remain calm to slightly choppy.
As night falls, skies will stay mostly clear but low clouds and fog will return, particularly near the coast. Winds will ease to 2 to 3 Beaufort, and the sea will remain relatively calm. Night-time temperatures will drop to around 19°C across the island, including the mountains.
Looking ahead, the weather will stay mostly fine from Tuesday to Thursday, although patches of low cloud and fog may appear overnight and early in the morning.
No significant change in temperature is expected through midweek, with values continuing to hover above the average for this time of year.
Authorities are urging residents, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours.
