Russia and Ukraine exchanged intense drone strikes on Tuesday, disrupting air traffic and causing damage to civilian infrastructure amid a dramatic escalation in the air war between the two countries.

In Ukraine, Russian drones hit multiple targets across the capital Kyiv and the southern port city of Odesa. Local officials reported damage to residential buildings and fires in several districts, including the historic Podil neighborhood in Kyiv. Emergency responders were deployed as explosions rocked the city past midnight. In Odesa, a maternity ward and an emergency medical facility were struck. No casualties were reported in the hospital, as staff and patients were safely evacuated.

The attacks come just a day after what Ukraine said was Russia’s largest drone assault to date, in what Moscow has called a retaliation for Ukrainian incursions inside Russian territory.

Meanwhile, Ukraine launched its own barrage of drones into Russian territory, prompting the temporary suspension of flights at all airports serving Moscow and St. Petersburg. Russian officials claimed 102 Ukrainian drones were downed, including nearly half over the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine. Though no damage was reported, Russia’s civil aviation authority imposed widespread flight halts for safety, with some restrictions remaining in place Tuesday morning.

Both sides deny targeting civilians, yet the war—now in its third year—has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, the overwhelming majority of them Ukrainian.
