Representatives of the Larnaca and Dromolaxia-Meneou municipalities met on Wednesday to discuss a study on compensatory measures related to Larnaca airport operations and formally requested a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides.
“The study documents the need to provide compensatory benefits to the municipalities of Larnaca and Dromolaxia-Meneou,” Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras and Dromolaxia-Meneou Mayor Kypros Andronikou said in a joint statement.
Commissioned by the Larnaca municipality, the study outlines three main pillars for a compensation policy: the creation of a rehabilitation and social rewards fund, immediate compensation for residents, and the implementation of strategic development and infrastructure projects in the area.
According to the mayors, the study evaluated both the negative and positive impacts of airport operations, including noise and air pollution, as well as urban planning pressure on the surrounding communities.
The municipalities said they are ready to present the findings and proposals and have requested that a meeting with the president “be scheduled without delay.”
Back in March, the transport committee demanded that both municipalities should receive compensation for the disturbances caused by air traffic, with MEPs stressing affected areas had to be compensated “for the environmental and social impact”.
Dromolaxia-Meneou Mayor Kypros Andronikou had condemned the situation as an “ongoing injustice,” highlighting a stark contrast between the airport’s “multimillion-euro revenue” and the “mounting financial burdens on local municipalities”.
“This demand is not new,” he added. “We, the two municipalities, are determined to pursue this matter to the end – even taking the case to Cypriot and European courts, if necessary, to secure justice.”
