The summer months definitely treat us to a plethora of live music events, concerts and gigs from big theatre stages to intimate squares. This June is no different and this weekend, in particular, has several events in store for music lovers. Get ready, because it is time to enjoy some of the island’s creatives live as well as singers from the Greek music scene.

The Gandalfinis are a Cypriot band rooted in funk, soul, and jazz – but their story goes far beyond genre. Drummer Marios Nicolaou also performs with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, while bassist and occasional vocalist Constantinos Messios is a practising lawyer. Trumpet player Michalis Michael works in banking, and guitarist-vocalist Gregory Artemides is a professional programmer. The youngest in the group, keyboardist and vocalist Argyro Christodoulides, is both a composer and an academic.

Their collaboration is shaped by a mix of cultural influences – just like their name, which playfully blends James Gandolfini’s iconic role in The Sopranos with the legendary wizard Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. This Saturday, the band will bring their funky sound to Sarah’s Jazz Club.

Larnaca this Saturday will celebrate World Music Day as Make Music Cyprus brings an extended version of its annual event. Ahead of the official performances in Nicosia on June 21, this year’s event includes performances in Larnaca this week. Nine performers will fill Zouhouri Square with music from 6pm to midnight.

First up, the K&O duet will perform at 6pm, followed by Sisyphos’ rock sounds and Victoty of I’s alternative rock music. At 8.10pm Windcraft Voices will perform live just before some folk and traditional sounds by Anaren Mpourekk. Then, groups Liquie, 4friends, Mixtape Duo and Jenny Karapataki will perform to wrap up the night. All of this, with free entry!

At Limassol’s Municipal Gardens, the beloved Greek duo Kostis Maraveyas and Panos Mouzourakis join forces for a charity concert. Their Saturday performance will spread joy and hope through their summery, uplifting music while supporting the actions of the Ithaki Association for the Support of People with Dementia.

On Sunday, The Melting Pot concert, also in Limassol, will welcome the local band Nabu Pera – a trio ensemble consisting of Demetris Yiasemides, Natasa Hadjiandreou and Savvas Thoma. The musicians will bring their unique sound influenced by the traditional music of the wider Eastern Mediterranean, contemporary classical music, as well as electronic music, to a performance starting at 7.30pm. Expect vibraphone dreamy harmonies, electrifying percussion dialogues and Anatolian vocals.
