Hoteliers in the Paphos region have called on the government to “lower the tone” over the escalations between Israel and Iran, expressing their fear that it could affect the tourism industry.

The hoteliers expressed their readiness to host the unexpected arrivals of the approximately 2,400 Israelis on 29 flights which were diverted to Larnaca and Paphos airports, following ongoing attacks in the region.

Whilst expressing their hope that the “chaotic situation” in the Middle East would end soon, the hoteliers appealed to the government not to send the “wrong messages” so as not to affect the local tourism industry.

In response to the volatile situation in the Middle East, security measures have been stepped up in the Paphos region including Paphos airport, accommodations hosting Israeli nationals both in the city centre and rural areas and in locations that attract large gatherings.

Authorities have also increased their presence at the Jewish synagogue in Kato Paphos and other “points of Israeli interest”.
