This month two art forms come together in a deeply personal tribute to an iconic female figure in Cypriot families – grandmothers. Hosted in the lush, green oasis of Gardens of the Future in old Nicosia, this hands-on workshop blends the charm of storytelling with the soulful blue tones of cyanotype printing – a camera-less process from the 1840s.
On Saturday, from 10am to 1pm, participants will gather for a morning of reminiscence, creativity and connection, paying tribute to these women. Led by cyanotype artist The Curious Curly and actress/theatre practitioner Natalia Panayiotou, the For Our Grandmothers workshop invites attendees to reflect on the role grandmothers had in their lives, their stories and lessons they have passed on. Through experiential activities and facilitated dialogue, an intimate group will be guided to honour their grandmothers.
Then, participants will be guided through the cyanotype process – an early photographic printing technique known for its rich Prussian blue hues – using personal photos of their grandmothers. The group will learn all about the cyanotype method, what it is, how it is made and how to turn a photo into an original cyanotype print. At the end of the workshop, each guest will take home a framed cyanotype featuring their grandmother.
Organised by The Curious Curly and the Yasemin Collective, this intimate gathering is designed to celebrate, honour and share stories. Spots are very limited and just a few remain. Participation is €45, which includes all cyanotype materials, a glass frame, guidance throughout the workshop, and refreshments.
To ensure the best results, participants are asked to send a digital photo of their grandmother (or a favourite moment with her) after booking.
“Come join us,” say organisers, “in celebrating the lives of our beloved grandmothers through story, sunlight, and shades of blue.”
