Somehow, the end of August has reached us and here to bid farewell to this hot summer month is a series of weekend events

Open-air cinema

Several film screenings are happening around the island this weekend, and perhaps the highlight is the first edition of the Larnaca Film Festival that is taking over different Larnaca locations. From today until Sunday, four different films will be screened each night.

Inaugurating the festival is There’s Still Tomorrow (C’è Ancora Domani) that is on tonight at the Artists’ Park. Tomorrow, My Brother’s Orchestra (En Fanfare) will be shown at the Larnaca Municipal Gardens, followed by the Cypriot documentary Skammata at the Larnaca Archaeological Museum on Saturday. The festival will close with the screening of Cypriot short films on Sunday, held at Zouhouri Square.

For those in Nicosia, there are several outdoor cinema evenings planned. The weekend screenings at Konstantia Open-Air Cinema continue with the films The Swimming Pool (on Friday), All Shall Be Well (on Saturday) and The Crossing (on Sunday). Meanwhile, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation continues its Faneromeni25 Art Festival with a family-friendly screening of Toto 2 today.

Live music

Live performances in gorgeous locations are happening this weekend, bringing mesmerising soundscapes to villages and towns. On Friday night, Technopolis 20 will host the Estrella Sonora ensemble as it pays tribute to the women who left their mark on the Greek music scene.

At the Amiantos Cultural Centre, a unique performance will take place on Friday as Cypriot music joins forces with classical chamber music. The TratSik String Quartet will present original compositions by Cypriot composers who combine classical music influenced by the musical traditions of the island.

In the village of Vavla, a special evening with varied performances is coming up on Saturday. The Outdoor Cultural Evening will host a short film screening of The Foreigner, a theatre performance titled Oi Matziellemenes and a live session of Mediterranean music by ANeraides featuring Konstantina Fella. The event will be held at the Vavla Amphitheatre and has free entrance.

Festivals

This weekend is not short of festivals either, welcoming new editions, returning annual traditions and updated versions. The Prodromos Street Festival will re-ignite the community feeling in the Larnaca neighbourhood this Saturday, celebrating its residents, varied generations and their stories. The festival aims to re-imagine what citizens want for their neighbourhoods and to bring people together.

Besides street food, DJs and creative corners, the festival will also feature rare images of old Prodromos in an exhibition, oral storytelling delivered by elderly residents themselves and traditional dishes prepared by locals.

Celebrating a juicy summer fruit this Saturday is the Kato Mylos Peach Festival, which will fill the village with markets and local recipes inspired by peaches, a live entertainment programme and plenty of Cypriot delicacies to try.

Finally, in a revamped mini edition, Anti-Skino Festival leaves behind its previous location of Pyrgos and moves to old Nicosia. This Thursday and Friday, the festival will present a music-theatre gothic fairy tale, experimental dance theatre and a film screening at various Nicosia locations, in an effort to continue supporting independent and experimental performance art.
