A beloved summer meal for many Cypriots is a juicy plate of kleftiko – not a light meal in the slightest yet certainly flavoursome for meat lovers. Every September, rural associations celebrate this local dish with its very own festival so get ready for the 8th Ofto Kleftiko Festival of Meneou.
The Larnaca district is busy preparing to host kleftiko fans and chefs for an evening of food and music. Hosted opposite the Athlitiko Somatio Kokkinou Astera, the festival will welcome visitors with open arms… and a plate of kleftiko, potatoes and bulgur wheat.
More than one ton of meat will be slow-baked in a traditional dome oven for visitors to enjoy, promising authentic Cypriot kleftiko. Expect hearty portions, juicy potatoes and live entertainment, all for €18.
The festival will open with the EDON Pervolia Philharmonic, continuing with songs by the Dromolaxia–Meneou Municipal Choir. Also on the programme are folk and traditional music performed live on stage by Andri Karantoni and Nikolas Pissias.
For younger audiences, a children’s corner will be set up with inflatables and face painting. And for those hungry, it is not just ofto kleftiko that will be served on the night. Food stalls will serve loukoumades, crepes, and other delicacies while nearby, a market will feature local exhibitors with their handmade jewellery and crafts.
