Limassol district court issued a seven-day remand order on Friday against the two 28-year-olds who were arrested in Greece and extradited to Cyprus in connection with the murder of 49-year-old Stavros Demosthenous last month.
The two suspects were brought to court under draconian security measures, wearing bulletproof vests. Their defence lawyers did not object to their remand.
The 28-year-olds were first arrested in Thessaloniki under a European arrest warrant. They are are accused of being involved in the murder of Limassol businessman Stavros Demosthenous who was shot dead while sitting in a car next to his 18-year-old son in the Ayios Athanasios area of Limassol on October 17.
As of now, the case involves four other defendants. These include a 51-year-old whose DNA was found in a stolen vehicle linked to the case and a 31-year-old – identified as a Georgian – who allegedly acquired fake licence plates for the same vehicle and helped the two men flee Cyprus to Greece.
The other suspects are two 30-year-olds, one of them being a convicted prisoner accused of having ordered the murder from within the central prison. The other is alleged of having purchased and sold the motorcycle used in the perpetrators’ escape.
Police investigations have so far revealed that the bullets that killed Demosthenous were likely fired from a van that was driving right in front of the car that he and his son were in.
The van was later found to have been set on fire, while a motorcycle, also believed to have been used in the killing, was found abandoned in the Limassol area.
