The second weekend of March is packed with events that celebrate creativity, music, art and women as International Women’s Day arrives this Sunday
Women’s Day events
Saturday kicks off the weekend’s festivities with a crafty event at Yfantourgeio in Nicosia, organised by the Centre for Social Innovation-CSI, in celebration of women’s actions and the often unseen care responsibilities women carry in their everyday lives. Participants can choose between three artistic workshops; an olive wreath making and floristry basics workshop, a traditional Ukrainian wood block printing workshop and a self-love vision board workshop.
Coffee shop Stes Koroues, off Ermou Street in downtown Nicosia, will also host a Women’s Day event on Sunday with an all-day exhibition of collages made from photographs of women’s day demonstrations and other feminist events and historical moments of the 20th century.
At 11.30am a cyanotype workshop will use female figures, texts, natural elements and light to create photograms using a photographic printing technique from the 19th century. In the evening, Annie Khoury will perform at 9pm and an open mic night will close the evening.
Also in Nicosia, a Daylight Disco Women Only Party will take place at Yfantourgeio on Sunday from 3pm to 8pm. DJ WonderLu on the DJ decks will blast disco party music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, bringing nostalgic bangers and favourite tunes for women to let loose and party carefree.
In Limassol, an exhibition opens on Sunday welcoming ten women artists from different backgrounds, countries and art practices. Hosted at the Lumiere Art Gallery, the CHROMA By Her exhibition will run until March 21.
Paphos too will have a themed event on Sunday as the Lea Women’s Wellness and Arts Centre organises the Women’s Day Festival. From 11am to 6.30pm, there will be a women’s bazaar, feminine body and spirit workshops and a closing circle with cacao, kirtan music and ecstatic dance.
Live music
For this week’s music performances, four events stand out – two in the capital and two in the Larnaca district. First up is the self-taught singer Panagiotis Loizou returning to Prozak on Friday for the second year. He will present songs from his debut album Dyo Kosmou as well as unreleased material and favourite cover pieces. Accompanying him will be Christina Polykarpou on Cretan lyra and Zenonas Economides on electric guitar.
The soulful rhythm of rock-blues and Southern blues will sound at Sarah’s Jazz & Blues Club on Friday evening as the Time Ride band plays classic rock from the 60s, 70s and 80s and the best of blues songs.
In Aradippou, Kafeneion Ermis will host Anaren Bourekk this Friday for an evening of rembetiko and folk music, cold beers, ouzo, tsipouro and zivania. On Saturday, the Gallery Sessions at Aradippou’s Vasiliou Gallery will host the Cyprus Percussion Group, who will perform a unique concert that explores the possibilities of percussion within the distinct acoustics of a gallery space. Taking over the floor will be musicians Enyalios Evangelou Papadopoulos, Marios Nicolaou and Ioulios Georgakopoulos, playing live at 8.30pm.
