Cyprus has “strongly condemned” the attack against Unifil peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, pointing out that “attacks against United Nations personnel are unacceptable and pose a grave threat to international peace and security.”
In a post on X, the foreign ministry said, “Cyprus strongly condemns the attack against Unifil peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, which resulted in the loss of a French servicemember and injuries to others.”
It added that “the ceasefire must be respected.”
“We extend our sincere condolences to the government and people of France, and wish a swift and full recovery to those injured,” it said.
A French soldier was killed and three others wounded while clearing a road in southern Lebanon in an attack that Unifil peacekeepers and French officials said on Saturday was likely carried out by Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Three other members of the Unifil peacekeeping mission were injured, two of them seriously.
