Cyprus has been named among the 24 best countries for retirement abroad in 2026 by Forbes, with Limassol, Paphos, Pyrgos and Larnaca singled out as attractive destinations.

The US magazine describes Cyprus as a “sunny Mediterranean island state where English is widely spoken”, commending its beaches, climate, healthcare, low crime and political stability.

According to Forbes, the cost of living in Cyprus is around one third lower than the US average, while permanent residents can access the public healthcare system.

With English being widely spoken across the island, Forbes identifies this as a strong advantage for American retirees.

Forbes describes obtaining residency in Cyprus as “moderately easy”, with American retirees able to pursue a residence permit through retirement income or the purchase of qualifying property.

The magazine also refers to the Cyprus US tax agreement, which prevents double taxation, and other tax advantages available to foreign retirees.

A disadvantage identified for Americans is the absence of direct flights between Cyprus and the United States, meaning return journeys require a connection.

Cyprus is one of 12 European countries included in the 2026 list, including Austria, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.
