The amount of water currently held in the island’s reservoirs is more than double that held at the same time last year, figures from the Water Development Department showed on Monday.

Total storage comes to 111 million cubic metres (MCM) or 38.2 per cent of capacity. This time last year, water reserves stood at 43.9 MCM or 15.1 per cent of capacity.

Moreover, 17 of the 18 reservoirs hold more water than they did a year ago. The only exception is the reservoir in Achna.

Kouris, the largest dam, currently has 45.3 MCM and is at 39.4 per cent of capacity. The amount of water there is triple compared to the same time last year.

Kouris is part of the Southern Conveyor. Built in phases starting in the 1980s, the conveyor collects surplus water from the southwest and moves it through a pipeline network eastward across the island to supply major towns, industrial centres, and agricultural irrigation in Limassol, Larnaca, and Famagusta.

Overall, the Southern Conveyor dams are at 35.7 per cent of capacity.

The Asprokremmos dam (Paphos district) is the second largest reservoir. It currently reports 20 MCM and is at 38.4 per cent of capacity.

Altogether, the reservoirs in the Paphos district are now 28.9 per cent full, compared to 10.1 per cent last year.

Meanwhile the reservoir at Kalopanayiotis (Nicosia district) holds the best record, as it is 99.4 per cent full. However, the dam is at the lower end of capacity, capable of holding just 0.3 MCM.
