A fire at a restaurant in a five-storey building in Limassol on Thursday was caused by accumulated grease igniting inside the chimneys, the fire brigade said on Friday.

Limassol fire stations responded at 9.27am with four fire engines and a hydraulic telescopic platform.

The fire was brought under control at 11.30am.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the chimneys, while heat damaged rooftop equipment and external installations.

Part of the building’s paintwork and electrical installation in the dining area were also affected.

A restaurant employee was inside preparing for the day when he noticed the fire and left safely.

Across Cyprus, the fire brigade responded to 41 calls on Thursday and early on Friday, including 19 fires, 19 special service incidents and three false alarms.
