In this video, yogi and mystic Sadhguru, counsels parents on the task of bringing up children, urging them to allow every kid to become their own person, and not merely an attempted copy of their elders.
“If the way you are is everything,” notes the Isha Foundation head, “naturally your aspiration will be they should become like you, which will be a backwards step for the next generation of people.
“What the next generation should be? What you cannot imagine – that’s what they should be.”
Therefore, don’t try to mould your children in your own image, Sadhguru cautions mothers and fathers. Rather, focus on providing the pleasant, stable atmosphere that a youngster needs to grow, he says.
To do this, first create a joyful, and then a loving environment – give them your love and attention, which kids need till they are around seven, he advises. After that age, they will want to “distance themselves”, wanting to “become their own thing, and it’s fine”.
“Your only business is to keep them in a very joyful and loving incubator.”
