In this video, yogi and mystic Sadhguru, discusses four strategies for optimal nutrition, drawing attention to the fact that no one-diet-fits-all exists. That said, there are certainly ways of eating that should be avoided.

“Food must be suitable for the body that we eat for,” says the Isha Foundation head, pointing out that the roots of healthy eating were planted centuries ago, but have been eroded over time through modern living.

The four keys to optimal nutrition, offered by Sadhguru, are:

  1. Eat no more than two meals a day. At Sadhguru’s ashram, residents eat at 10am and 7pm, and are active throughout the day. Do not be afraid of an empty stomach, he says – it is actually a very healthy thing. In fact, today’s most popular nutritional trend – Intermittent Fasting – has very ancient roots!
  2. Touch or hover your hands over your food. Feel the quality of what you are about to eat, and discern what is worthy of consuming or discarding.
  3. Eat with gratitude. Consume consciously and with reverence for the components of your meal, as each was once living, and is now sacrificed to feed you. Treat your food as a part of yourself and it will behave optimally within you.
  4. Avoid adopting so-called ‘good health habits’. Habits are unconscious practices, warns Sadhguru, and humans are capable of, and should aspire to, doing every thing with consciousness. Do not try to ‘automate’ your life, he says.
