‘Mayors’ in the north have come together to form a political party, Turkish Cypriot media reported on Monday.

According to Kibris Postasi the party will involve several ‘mayors’ who ran for their posts as independents, while others who may join ran with the National Unity Party.

At present, the new political party will include the ‘mayors’ of Kyrenia, Lapithos, Karavas, Ayios Epiktitos and Yialousa, the paper said.

One of the core reasons cited for this move is the mayors’ inability to offer the necessary services to citizens while being the ones who face the brunt of their complaints.

“Let us take some political responsibility and form our own party,” several ‘mayors’ stated.

Newspaper Halkin Sesi, meanwhile, said that the ‘mayor’ of Karavas expressed concerns at how they are being treated by the ‘government’, adding that the insufficient support they received during the pandemic has been ‘the last straw’.
