Italian MP and rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, Piero Fassino, was informed about the illegal actions of the Turkish Cypriot ‘regime’ in Famagusta Monday afternoon, in preparation for his report on the city for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

In a statement Famagusta mayor, Simos Ioannou, described the meeting as “very constructive,” saying that the Italian MP had been briefed on the problem of Famagusta, the illegal actions carried out in the enclosed area, and what was done to the beach on the stretch from the King George Hotel to the Oceania apartment building.

Ioannou said that Fassino “asked several questions which we have answered and we expect him to make a report that is really fair” adding that what is happening in Famagusta is a violation of the decisions of the UN Security Council, Resolutions 550 and 789.

Ioannou said that Fassino “has shown a lot of understanding of our positions and we hope that he will convey these to the Council of Europe.”

The Italian MP inspected the works in occupied Famagusta through binoculars from the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Famagusta in Deryneia.
