The swearing-in ceremony of the new appellants of the Supreme Court takes place on Thursday at 10am, in the presence of President Nikos Christodoulides.

The 16 new appellants were appointed on January 31, following the filling of positions that took place on September 23, 2022.

The establishment of the Court of Appeal became possible on July 14, 2022, following the passage by the House plenary of bills in the context of the reform of justice and reform of the judicial system.

The Court of Appeal will be the appellate jurisdiction and will operate in specialised divisions for fast adjudication of appeals.

It shall be subordinate to the Supreme Court and have jurisdiction to hear all appeals of decisions of any court, other than decisions of the Supreme Constitutional Court and decisions of the Supreme Court, and other than appeals referred to the Supreme Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court under their highest appellate jurisdiction.

The Court of Appeal consists of sixteen judges, appointed by the Supreme Judicial Council, and will operate in divisions, as they will be determined in procedural regulations.

A lawyer practicing for at least 12 years, and of high moral standing, may be appointed as judge of the Court of Appeal.
