Nicosia has been given a “green city award” for “sustainable traffic and transportation” in 2023 by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (Cycere).

The award was given for the redevelopment of Makarios, Stasikratous and Evagoros streets near the city’s centre.

As a result of the award, Cyprus automatically joins Cycere’s Network of Green Cities and Communities, which also includes the Paphos village of Kissonerga.

Responding to its receipt of the award, the Nicosia municipality said the regeneration of Makarios, Stasikratous, and Evagoros streets were an “innovation”.

“It lies in the idea that through the strengthening of sustainable mobility, the experience of a modern, upgraded and high quality urban space can attract new life with multiple activities and investments, without traffic congestion, noise and air pollution resulting from private car travel.”

They said the roads are Cyprus’ first example of a “shared space” roadway, in which cars are allowed to drive but must give priority to other forms of transportation.

They added that the redeveloped area incorporates “principles of urban bioclimatic planning, smart city infrastructure, [and] charging points for electric cars and bicycles”.

In addition, they said a provision was made for the installation of trams on those roads.

Nicosia, like Kissonerga, will be awarded with a green flag in a ceremony at the presidential palace for its efforts.
