The €2 coin is now being sold for more than €1,000 amongst collectors.
On the occasion of celebrating the 20th anniversary of Cyprus’ accession to the European Union in 2004, the central bank of Cyprus issued the €2 coin in 2024.
The bank issued the coin in a limited edition of 7,000, selling it for €20 but this has risen to €1,400 by resellers, although prices change constantly in line with demand.
If a lot of collectors are interested in the coin the prices rise even more, since the coin is sold out and the bank can’t do anything about the pricing of it.
The coin is two-tone with a nickel core, covered with nickel-plated brass and a cupro-nickel ring. It weighs 8.5 grammes, has a diameter of 25.75 millimetres and a thickness of 2.2 millimetres.
According to the Central Bank, it was designed by the artist George Stamatopoulos, while the coin was minted by the Bank of Greece’s Banknote and Securities Printing Institute.
