Work will start on flood prevention and infrastructure repairs in Kormakitis after January 30, the House refugee committee heard on Tuesday during a meeting to review the challenges faced by residents of the occupied village.

Speaking after the meeting, Akel MP Christos Christofias said that while financial compensation for flood victims in 2024 was handled promptly, there had been slower progress regarding essential repairs and preventative measures.

He said state officials confirmed the completion of studies on the matter, which are now with the interior ministry. Funding has been allocated and the necessary procedures are expected to commence in the coming weeks, with projects scheduled for completion in 2025.

Regarding the village’s football field, Christofias said the Cyprus sports organisation (Koa) had informed the committee of a decision by its outgoing board to fully restore the facility. The project, estimated to cost several tens of thousands of euros, has also been endorsed by Koa’s current board.

Regarding the village’s historic nursery building, Christofias revealed that a structural and restoration study has been completed, with costing for the project still pending. The ministry has expressed its intention to restore the building once the costing is finalised.

Christofias expressed hope that all necessary works for Kormakitis would indeed be completed within 2025. He emphasised the importance of these efforts, not only for the remaining residents but also for the broader plans of resettlement in the area.
