Τhe medieval fountain in the centre of the Paphos village of Choulou has been fully restored, mukhtar Marios Lazarou said on Tuesday.

The fountain was restored by the antiquities department at a cost of €45,000.

“Research has been carried out to restore the medieval fountain, along with the improvement of the surrounding area with a pedestrian bridge and a path,” Lazarou said.

The goal of the Choulou community is to further invest in similar development projects to attract more people to the village.

Choulou maintains its traditional character, while its settlement has a rare architecture influence.

The village is characterised by narrow streets and white stone-built houses with courtyards and internal arches, wooden windows and doors and tiles on the roofs.

The village was founded during the Byzantine period.

More recently, it was a mixed village until intercommunal fighting broke out in 1963, and the Turkish Cypriots left the village for neighbouring ones.
