Workers at Sagro Aquaculture in Cyprus have gone on an indefinite strike over unpaid wages. The strike began on Monday, with employees demanding urgent action from the ministry of labour.

The workers’ union, Segdamelin Peo, said this is not the first time employees have had to fight for their salaries. It accused the company of repeatedly failing to pay deductions into workers’ welfare funds, including the provident fund and the well-being fund.

The union added that workers have been forced to take legal action to recover overtime pay through the labour relations department. A court case is also ongoing over unpaid contributions to the provident fund.

The employer’s debts reportedly date back to 2019, and workers say they have no choice but to strike. They claim the company is no longer paying wages at all, leaving them without income.

Under Cyprus law, failure to pay wages and withholding deductions are criminal offences. The union is calling for the ministry of labour to take immediate action under the protection of wages law and the industrial relations code to enforce agreements and ensure workers receive their pay.
