The House will review amendments to animal welfare legislation in the coming months, focusing on dog euthanasia policies and mandatory microchipping to improve pet and gun dog tracking.

Plans will also be introduced for neutering stray dogs and preventing illegal dumping. Additionally, the Veterinary Services database will be upgraded and linked to the interior ministry’s Game Reserve database.

A press release on Friday stated that the issue was discussed on Monday in a meeting between the environment and animal welfare commissioner, the Cyprus Society for the Protection of Animals, and representatives from the interior and agriculture ministries.

The commissioner’s office is exploring ways to improve the enforcement of pet protection laws and will submit proposals in writing. It also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local authorities’ efforts to expedite the establishment of regional shelters for stray dogs.
