Cyprus fully supports the protection of Armenia’s’ sovereignty and its “European perspective”, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou said when welcoming the Armenian Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan in Nicosia on Thursday.

Demetriou highlighted the mutual support and solidarity, strong historical ties and overall “excellent relations” between Armenia and Cyprus.

She expressed gratitude for Armenia’s support regarding the Cyprus problems including efforts to resolve it. In this context, Demetriou stressed Cyprus’ commitment to productive negotiations aimed at “achieving a solution in accordance with international law and the relevant UN resolutions.”

Mkrtchyan was appreciative of Cyprus’ “steadfast solidarity” and support for Armenias efforts to achieve peace, including the successful conclusion of the Peace Agreement with Azerbaijan.

Regarding Armenia’s potential application for EU membership and its ties with Europe, Demetriou stressed the need for the EU and international community to taka a clear stance. Later, the ambassador informed Demetriou about current developments in this context.
