Green party leader Giorgos Perdikis on Thursday sent a strongly worded letter to Famagusta district governor Yiannis Karousos after it was alleged that district government employees uprooted palm trees from a beach in Protaras and erected an “illegal” prefabricated building.

Perdikis demanded an “immediate investigation” and the “restoration of legality” over the matter, saying that complaints had been made by people living in the Pallinio apartment complex near Protaras’ Fig Tree bay, and that the prefabricated building was erected near the nearby Sunrise Beach Hotel.

He said the complainants had informed him that such actions are illegal, and that it is “even more worrying” that the people who erected the prefabricated building are “alleged to be employees of the district government”.

He then added that should it be found that the acts were illegal, the area “must be returned to its original state”.

The environment and our beaches belong to everyone and no arbitrary or illegal intervention can be tolerated,” he said.

The Cyprus Mail contacted Karousos for comment.
