Two men have been arrested after a restaurant owner in northern Nicosia was shot in the leg on Saturday.

The shooting occurred at around 3.15pm on Saturday, with Ahmet Keskin being shot in the calf inside his restaurant.

Police investigations found that Keskin had been shot with a Glock, with a nine-millimetre cartridge being found at the scene alongside a jacket and hat worn by the suspect.

The gun which fired the shot was also found nearby, as well as eight live 9mm bullets.

Further investigations and examinations of CCTV footage from the restaurant and the surrounding area determined the identity of the suspect, with information then being provided to police at crossing points, the north’s Ercan (Tymbou) airport, and ports.

At around 5pm on Saturday, the suspect, a 25-year-old male Turkish national, was arrested at the airport. Police then determined that he had travelled to the north purporting to be a tourist.

He appeared in court on Sunday and was remanded in custody for three days.

Newspaper Yeni Duzen reported that the 25-year-old is from Istanbul and had “never come to Cyprus before” shooting Keskin in the leg.

Meanwhile, the police arrested a second man, a 30-year-old, who allegedly gave the 25-year-old the gun with which he shot Keskin in the leg.

The 30-year-old appeared in court on Monday morning, with it being found by police that he also entered the north on a tourist visa. He was remanded in custody for two days.

Keskin was in intensive care as of Sunday.
