A proposed photovoltaic park in Troulloi in the Larnaca district will not be going ahead, as environmental concerns outweighed the benefits of the project.

The project with an electricity production capacity of 11.67Mw and energy storage of 6Mw/12MWh, was blocked by a unanimous proposal by the ad hoc committee examining the park’s impact on the environment in a Natura 2000 special protection zone, in Koshi-Pallourokambos area.

The construction of the park was expected to have a serious and irreversible impact on the environment, philenews said.

The Game Fund, the Forestry Department, BirdLife, Terra Cypria and the Federation of Environmental Organisations were against the project, as the proposed park was of such extent that it would negatively affect species in the area, including hawks, by taking away their habitat, as well as nesting and hunting grounds.

Troulloi community council, Aradippou municipality, the local church, farmers, hunters and residents of the area also voiced objections to the park.
