Lanes will be closed on the motorway linking Limassol and Nicosia on carnival weekend, with the police saying the lane closures have been planned to “deal with the expected increased traffic” Limassol will see over the weekend.
The lane closures will centre around the Kalavasos bridge, where works have been ongoing since October 2023.
Between 7am and 4pm on Sunday, the stretch of road will only be open to southbound traffic, with northbound traffic diverted onto the old road via the Governor’s beach and the Kalavasos junction.
As such, the department said, from 9pm until 2pm, traffic from Nicosia to Limassol will “proceed smoothly on the motorway”, with there being two open lanes for southbound traffic.
At 4pm on Sunday, traffic will revert to its current contra-flow system, whereby there is one lane of traffic heading in each direction.
The public works department said there is expected to be “particularly increased traffic and a traffic congestion problem”, and that as such, it urges people to “plan their movement on the motorway in good time and, where possible, use alternative routes”.
