Limassol and Larnaca Mayors, Yiannis Armeftis and Andreas Vyras respectively, have expressed their satisfaction that their cities have been shortlisted for the title of European Capital of Culture 2030 and have pledged to continue their efforts to succeed.

In statements to CNA, Armeftis expressed satisfaction and pride that Limassol was shortlisted, assuring that the city’s effort continues “with determination and enthusiasm.”  “The satisfaction over being shortlisted is great, so is the happiness and emotion.”

“A great effort has been undertaken for many months now by members of Limassol 2030 and everyone deserves congratulations,” Armeftis said, expressing pride “for this effort, the zeal and selflessness of all participants.”

The city and Limassol’s citizens embrace this effort, he pointed out, adding that “we are continuing with even more enthusiasm, inspiration and determination to reach our goal.”

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras described February 27 as a “very important day” for the city, marking its progression to the final selection phase alongside Limassol.

Larnaca’s bid began in 2022, he explained, highlighting the collective effort by the city’s business and cultural communities, the municipal council, and other stakeholders.

“We will continue our efforts because we believe that not only does Larnaca stand to gain from being selected as European Capital of Culture for 2030, but it also has much to offer,” Vyras noted.

He acknowledged that significant work remains before the second evaluation in October.

A final decision on which city will be awarded the title is expected by the end of 2025, following an expert review.
