A 21-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening after being found by the anti-poaching squad in possession of a large quantity of tobacco which had been smuggled from the north.

The man was stopped near the village of Astromeritis at around 6pm, with a search of his vehicle finding 197 boxes of cigarettes “of various brands”, 166 boxes of heated tobacco products, 51 packs of rolling tobacco, and two boxes of cigars.

He was arrested and then issued a fine and released, while the tobacco products were handed over to the customs department.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
