Monday’s 24-hour-strike at Polemidia municipality was called off a few minutes in, after mayor Andros Theodorou promised to meet the workers’ demands.

The strikers then returned to their work.

Theodorou said he would be entering a dialogue with the trade unions to meet the workers’ demands.

“They are long-standing demands, some of which have already been met and others will be met soon,” he told the Cyprus News Agency.

The workers are demanding that they be placed on salary scales that reflect their work and be paid money owed to them, inter alia.

Trade unions Sek, Peo and Deok said the mediation service at the labour ministry justified the workers, saying that the Polemidia municipality was violating agreements.
