Twenty children from Greece fighting cancer were given a moment of joy on Wednesday as they met President Nikos Christodoulides at the presidential palace, with a surprise promise of tickets to see their favourite basketball teams play in Athens.

The visit, organised by the Cypriot charity Ena Oniro, Mia Efxi and its Greek counterpart Floga, brought together young patients and their families for a break from hospital routines.

Christodoulides, moved by their stories, pledged to send five Olympiakos fans and five Panathinaikos supporters to upcoming EuroLeague playoff games in Athens, with Cyprus covering their travel and accommodation costs.

During the tour, the president shared Cyprus’ turbulent history, including the 1974 conflict and the story of the presidential palace. He also recalled how Cypriot children displaced by war were once hosted by Greek families for their education, a gesture he now repaid with kindness.

Head of Ena Oniro, Mia Efxi, George Penintaex, outlined ongoing efforts to fulfil children’s dreams, including a planned joint trip to Paris for Greek and Cypriot patients to visit Disneyland and Asterix park.

Mary Tryphonidou, president of Floga, highlighted the stark realities families face, with funds often diverted to urgent medical bills and hospital upgrades rather than trips. The charity also provides accommodation for families during treatment.

In a statement, Ena Oniro, Mia Efxi said the trip aimed to “help children discover Cyprus and regain strength for their treatment, away from the daily struggles of hospital life.”

As the visit ended, the youngsters left with souvenirs and smiles and the hope of cheering their teams in Athens.
