A quantity of cannabis exceeding 50 kilograms was found in a stolen vehicle driven by a 41-year-old man, which was pursued by members of the Cyprus police’s anti-drug unit (Ykan) on Thursday. The driver managed to flee on foot and is now being sought.

According to the police, after evaluating a tip-off, Ykan officers located the 41-year-old driving a car around 3:00 pm yesterday in the Parekklisia area. When they signalled for the driver to stop for a check, he allegedly accelerated, leading to a pursuit.

In his attempt to escape, the vehicle collided with three police cars and was immobilised, while the driver managed to flee on foot, taking advantage of the difficult terrain.

It is noted that during the pursuit, police officers, in an effort to stop the 41-year-old, used their service firearms. Additionally, an officer was slightly injured in the collision and was treated at Limassol general hospital before being discharged.

The immobilised vehicle was sealed and taken to Limassol CID, where it was confirmed to have been reported as stolen.

A search was then carried out at the 41-year-old’s home, where 20 grams of cannabis were found and seized.

Earlier this afternoon, a search was conducted on the car, where a total of 41 packages containing cannabis, with a total weight of 50 kilograms and 525 grams, were found and seized.

A warrant for the 41-year-old’s arrest has been issued, and he is being sought.

The Limassol anti-drug unit (Ykan) is investigating the case.
