A 39-year-old man was arrested for suspected theft in Nicosia early Saturday after he was stopped by police while riding a bicycle with his 12-year-old son.

Police said that around 5am a motorised patrol spotted a man and a child with two small travel bags and a shoulder bag with a crowbar sticking out, riding a bicycle on a Nicosia street.

A check revealed various ecclesiastical objects inside the bags for which the man did not provide satisfactory explanations as to how they came into his possession.

Additionally, police said a nylon bag with a crystalline substance believed to be possibly a narcotic was found in the suspect’s possession and seized by the authorities.

The man was arrested and taken to the Nicosia police division together with his son that was put under supervision by an officer from the social welfare service.

A subsequent search of the 39-year-old’s home uncovered several credit cards, bicycles, electric scooters, computers, tools and other valuables suspected to be stolen goods were found and seized.

The suspect was taken into custody and is set to be remanded before court on Sunday.
