Archbishop Georgios on Sunday promised continued cooperation with the new Pope Leo XIV.
“We are certain that we will continue the cooperation, because for us, the institution and not the person who represents it is what is important,” he said at an event to mark Mother’s Day, which is celebrated in Cyprus on the second Sunday in May.
“I believe that the two churches, of Rome and of Cyprus, will continue to cooperate, and I believe that the dialogue which continues … will progress, so that in a world dominated by other religions, we Christians can give a message of unity.”
He added that he plans to visit Rome in the near future and to invite Pope Leo XIV to Cyprus.
Pope Leo XIV was elected to the role on Thursday, becoming the 267th man and the first American to become pope.
