A man suffered burns from a fire that broke out at his residence over the weekend was taken to the Nicosia General Hospital A&E.

According to the fire service, the fire, which broke out on Sunday around 6pm, in Archangelos is suspected to have started from a BBQ.

The fire service responded with two fire engines to put out the blaze, which had spread to rubbish being kept on the second floor of the residence, fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis said.

The house and equipment at the site were extensively damaged by the fire and smoke, and fire fighters using breathing apparatus used water hoses to put out the flames.

While attempting to extinguish the fire, the resident suffered burns and he received first aid onsite before being taken by ambulance to hospital.

Elsewhere in Nicosia, shortly after 8pm, the service responded with two trucks to a fire that broke out in the living room and terrace of a second-floor apartment in Lakatamia.

The fire caused extensive damage to both the veranda and the living room. The rest of the apartment was affected by smoke and heat, while a dog was rescued and handed over to its owners, who were absent at the time the fire broke out.

An investigation is to be carried out on Monday into the causes of the blaze in collaboration with the police.

The fire department responded to 35 incidents, 22 fires and 13 special services in the last 24 hours, Kettis said in a post on X.
