Investigations are ongoing into corruption allegations against senior officials of the football association, including its current head Giorgos Koumas, the attorney-general’s office said on Monday.
The AG’s office was responding to media reports, appearing on the same day, that a criminal probe into the matter had just been finished and handed over to attorney-general George Savvides.
But the AG’s office said only that the investigation “has not been completed yet”.
Earlier in the day, daily Politis ran a story claiming that the independent criminal investigator had wrapped up her probe and delivered it to the AG.
According to the newspaper, the findings were damning for Koumas, currently serving his second term as head of the football association. It spoke of “criminal offences” and “criminal acts” in relation to Koumas and other persons.
In late 2023 the attorney-general had ordered independent criminal investigator Alexandra Lycourgou to carry out a probe into suspicious activities by Cyprus Football Association (CFA) officials – primarily Koumas.
This was on the back of a report done by the sports ethics committee, which had determined that Koumas had a “competing interest”.
The ethics committee had investigated suspected manipulation of sports events as well as other suspected offences.
Media reports at the time said Koumas was suspected of having created an “unfair advantage” for some football clubs by way of manipulating the money paid to them as part of television rights deals.
This included the allegation that money paid to the football association by CytaVision for television rights to domestic Cypriot football matches “was distributed by the CFA, in time and quantity, according to the will of Giorgos Koumas”.
