Cypriot school students on a trip to Thessaloniki were reportedly involved in a homophobic attack there on Saturday, a letter sent to the education minister by Thessaoniki Pride on Sunday said.

After receiving the open letter, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou has requested a report of what happened, director of secondary education Nicholas Yiasoumi told the Cyprus News Agency.

Thessaloniki Pride said it had recorded the incident with the Racist Violence Recording Network, based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.

It said there was a “verbal attack with transphobic and homophobic insults” against two people as a result of which the police were called.

It said around 20 students were involved in the attack against a trans girl and a gay man, who they happened to run into in the street I the early hours of Saturday.

The two victims “seeking de-escalation and dialogue, chose not to file a lawsuit, but reserved for future actions,” it added.

Yiasoumi said “the ministry of education was aware from the first minute that this letter has been published. We await the return of the school or schools concerned, for the to submit an event report and we will investigate the incident.”

He said he had spoken to some of those in Thessaloniki, adding they will return on Monday.

The Thessaloniki Pride parade will take place on June 21.
