A 25-year-old man from Australia was remanded on Thursday for eight days by the Larnaca district court after authorities discovered more than 23 kilogrammes of cannabis in his luggage.

The arrest took place on June 4 at Larnaca airport. According to the Customs Department, the man had arrived in Cyprus on a flight from Thailand via the United Arab Emirates.

Acting on intelligence, customs officers and members of the Cyprus drug law enforcement unit (Ykan) stopped the passenger for a routine inspection shortly after he landed.

During a scan of his suitcase, officers noticed suspicious content. A physical search followed, which revealed 44 nylon packages containing a total of 23.154kg of cannabis.

The man was immediately arrested and the drugs were confiscated.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the source and destination of the drugs. The suspect will remain in custody as inquiries continue.
