The 26th edition of the Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival is in full swing, bringing a breath of fresh and bold movement to the stage. This week, three productions from Cyprus, Belgium and Italy are about to take over the Rialto Theatre.

From Cyprus, Panayiotis Tofi presents Erroneous Encounters on Thursday, an evocative mix of movement, poetry and live electronic sound. Drawing from his research on dispossession and decentralisation, Tofi explores the fragmentation of the self in a post-traumatic reality. Three male dancers move as if in glitch – bodies halting and flowing in unexpected rhythms – as a composer and an actress complete the haunting landscape on stage.

Two days later, Belgium’s Arno Ferrera and Gilles Polet offer CUIR, a charged duet exploring the fine line between resistance and surrender. The two performers, harnessed and entangled, move between tenderness and tension, power and play. Their body-to-body confrontation becomes a dance of consent, complicity and curiosity.

Monday brings Folklore Dynamics by Italy’s VIDAVÈ Company — and it pulses with political energy. Using dialects as a metaphor for suppressed identities, the work confronts power structures and celebrates the emotional richness of folk traditions. Five performers channel instinct, defiance and deep-rooted connection in choreography that feels at once urgent and poetic.

Each performance begins at 8.30pm and is a window into contemporary stories told through movement. Whether abstract or narrative, stripped back or layered in symbolism, the works presented challenge, inspire and connect. And if this week is packed with events, fear not, more Cyprus Contemporary Dance performances will take place until June 22 when the festival concludes.
