The mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou is “totally against” the creation of a shelter for unaccompanied minors on Cyprus Land Development Corporation (Koag) land, warning that the municipality will take strong measures if authorities proceed with their plans.

“Last year, the deputy ministry of social welfare requested the municipality’s opinion on the use of a plot of land in Kiti – which belongs to Koag but falls within the municipality’s boundaries – for a creation of a shelter for unaccompanied minors,” mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou Kypros Andronikou said.

“The municipal council was strongly opposed to this development, and last November we sent a letter to the director of social services, but did not receive any response,” Andronikou said.

The mayor said that the Koag land “should be used for the construction of homes for young couples that meet the financial criteria, as it was originally intended.”

He added that another letter was sent in May to the director of social welfare services without any response or update.

“For her part, Deputy Social Welfare Minister Marilena Evangelou remains silent and refuses to even pick up the phone and talk to the mayor, even though she is aware of the issues raised by the municipality,” Andronikou said.

The authorities, he added, “did not give specific guidelines on what exactly the creation of such a structure would entail.”

“The people of the municipal district of Kiti are in an uproar, since we all know exactly what the creation of such a shelter entails, and we do not accept such a thing on the land of our municipality,” Andronikou said.

“They should know that if necessary, they will find us standing in their way, and we will take strong measures.”

The mayor concluded by demanding “immediate information” on the issues mentioned in the two letters sent at a meeting arranged between the municipality and the deputy ministry.
