This summer, the roof garden of the Leventis Tower on the 15th floor transforms into an open-air cinema. In collaboration with STYX Film Encounters and in parallel with the temporary exhibition Look at Me! Portraits in Greece by Robert A McCabe, the gallery presents In Shutter Speed – a series of film screenings showcasing three films from the 1950s and 1960s related to photography.
Running from the end of June to mid-July, the event series will offer moments of reflection, diving into the world of photography and cinema, topped with panoramic views of Nicosia from the tower’s rooftop. First up is Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 Rear Window which will be screened on June 25. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, 14 nominations in total and earned seven wins. It follows the life of a wheelchair-bound photographer in Greenwich who spies on his neighbours and is convinced one of them committed murder.
On July 2, Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film Blow Up will be screened; a psychological mystery film that is considered to be the Italian director’s biggest hit and his first English-language feature. In the film, a London fashion photographer goes on an ordinary park walk to take photos and when he later enlarges his prints, he believes he has stumbled upon a murder.
Next is William Wyler’s 1953 Roman Holiday, a romantic comedy featuring Audrey Hepburn who plays a princess who abandons her luxuries and escapes to Rome where she meets an American news reporter. The film won three Academy Awards and received over 15 nominations. Catch it on the rooftop on July 16.
