Reports on Monday said a real estate conference in Limassol, organised by the Israeli Nadlan Centre and scheduled for this week, has been cancelled likely due to security concerns.

The conference was to take place from June 18 to June 20 at a seaside hotel in Limassol.

Daily Politis said the event has now been cancelled, and it remained unclear whether it has been moved to a later date.

According to the newspaper, the cancellation has to do with security concerns – given the current situation in Israel – and also the fact that a number of speakers would not be able to fly from Israel as the airports there remain closed.

The event was set to host a number of Israeli and Cypriot personalities from the real estate sector, the banking industry and the legal profession.

Listed speakers included the mayors of Larnaca and Limassol, Andreas Vyras and Yiannis Armeftis, as well as Energy Minister George Papanastasiou. It also featured Arie Zeev Raskin, the Chief Rabbi of Cyprus.

The workshop got embroiled in controversy after the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement called out the mayor of Limassol over his attendance.

BDS called on Armeftis to “finally take a stand and condemn the genocide in Gaza as a minimal gesture of solidarity with the city’s Palestinian and Lebanese residents” and to clearly state whether he planned to attend the upcoming conference.

Armeftis’ name was subsequently removed from the conference website.

The two mayors later said they would not attend. Last week Papanastasiou likewise pulled out, citing other obligations.
